What sells music? - audience questionairre

is it pure lyrical genius and angelic voices that grab the attention of people across the world? ..or is it just sheer promotion through the artist's created image?

The first part of audience research was to find out why people listen to music, what kind of music they enjoy most, where do they get their music from, what makes them listen to it, who are their favourite artists at the current moment, how often do their preferences in music change etc... this research was done both online and in person, questionairres were made on word, and were both sent to people on MSN, and printed out and given to around 50 people in the school to fill in, results were generally as follows:
  • EVERYONE listens to music
  • most people listen to music to chill out
  • people have different tastes of music depending on what they're doing, what mood their in etc..
  • generally, alot of people like R'n'B
  • not many people listen to punk, heavy metal and goth music
  • ALOT of people illegaly download their music
  • ALOT of people listen to music off their ipod
  • people's preferences change depending on what they think is a "good song"..but this is always in the same genre of music they normally listen to
  • most popular artists right now are lady gaga, lowkey, lil wayne, drake, trey songs, eminem, tinie tempah, enique iglesias, rhianna, taylor swift.
  • alot of people are into mainstream music, not so much underground genre's
  • the amount of people listening to underground music is starting to increase rapidly
  • most people use software like limewire and frostwire and torrents to download music
i done further research to find out exactly what it is that makes people so keen on listening to certain artists, so i asked my sample who's their favourite artist and why?
the artists that came up many times and the reason for their selection were:

trey songz: ALOT of today's teenage girls are VERY into him for his looks..his music..and well..his looks
N-dubz: many teenagers are into their dress sense more than their music as alot of people follow dappy's "swagger".
Cheryl Cole: boys fantasize about her, and some genuine people actually like her music!

and the list just carries on with the general trend that people only listen to music because of their attachment to the artist, which is formed over managers promoting significant traits within them, that fans can adore, live up to, copy, share with their friends, etc!

for example, would N-dubz be as big if dappy never wore his trademark hat? would trey songz be as big if he wasn't as "sexy"? would cheryl cole be huge if she wasn't so "stunning" ?

in some cases yes, people do LOVE their music genuinely, but in most, its just fans adoring what is promoted of their Favorited artist! its like nowadays you can make anyone famous through mere promotion, they wouldn't even need an angelic voice!
