Above is my shooting schedule! (kept it simple to avoid any complications or arguments within the group!) it just lines out the times and roughly where we're going to film! (what we'll be filming will be lined out in the storyboard and blocked plans) we actually managed to stick to this, and the filming came out just right! this had to be re adjusted based on the fact that the artist himself wasn't always free for us, as he works in a bank too! so the times were based around when he was free, and a day he courteously took a day off for filming!
Above are all my storyboard! from top to bottom its my first storyboard to my 6th! with all the scenes i had outlined for my video! we'd be using this to film aswell! as it clearly outlines many aspects of filming! with all the places, shot types, framing, costume, lighting, sound and EVERY other aspect of photography outlined! so i began making preparation to film..with shooting schedules!
Storyboarding is HIGHLY important when making any video or similar production, because it directs you what to do! without it, it can often leave you puzzled as what to do next when filming!
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT TO AS!
in AS the storyboards weren't as detailed, shots were MUCH longer, and we didn't have to be as specific about the characters facial expressions and actions (unless it was necessary) so i have developed highly in comparison to AS in terms of the paperwork i produce before i set off to work!
Above is my developed blocked plan for our group! it takes into consideration timing, places, costume, contact information, days we need to do certain things, and what i need to do while im going on with my main production task! this is what i need to stick to while im progressing through my course form this point onwards in terms of filming, and hopefully everything should run smoothly!
the whole point of developing my blocked plan was so that i could take into consideration all other factors that may affect me when im going about doing my filming work! so it was best i developed my plan just so that i knew i could get the key things done and out of the way, and give myself better targets to work towards! everytime a new matter came up, i would take it into consideration and make a note to myself, ensuring i got it out of the way, and i kept making sure i was up to date and working to deadlines i set myself!
above is the first plan i made before i went and showed it my other group member, it outlines the stuff i thought would be neccessary to do before and during filming, i thought that whatever i had outlined would be the key players in what was needed to be done!
after showing it to my group member, i found that there was ALOT messing, especially to do with elements of the video! and when to contact the artist! as this was made BEFORE i had actually gone and contacted the artist to see what else he needed to be certain of before we got on with filming, so i had to re-do my plan after finding out that enough stuff was missing out, and i was missing key factors like "will the artist actually be able to come out at this point to film" and "how are we going to get to these places?!" and i also had to start choosing locations to film! which is VERY crucial!
Above is the second concept i came up with after the first wave of concept development, so this was where the audience took part in checking my concept and writing their views on a sheet that was passed around in class, and constructive feedback was given back! this was very important especially as the people in my class were my target market for the artist and his music! so any feedback here was key and changed made based on the feedback to suit the expectations of the consumers was crucial, it had to appeal to the target market in the end of the day, otherwise it wouldn't count as a successful marketing campaign!
So, after understanding what it was that my target market wanted to see from my video, i started thinking about what should be in the music video, i had to piece all the feedback together and create a concept for my video which would appeal to everyone! so here was my concept after feedback:
First off, lets have a look at what some elements in Video production are!
Elements of video production include (1) Pre-Production, (2) Production, and (3) Post Production. All video productions are organized in this way to ensure that the process is a seamless one, and the final-result is as envisioned. Pre-production is the planning stage of your shoot, and occurs before the camera starts rolling. By creating storyboards, scouting locations, and figuring out the budget ahead of time, the goal is for your production to be free of unnecessary worry. Production is the shooting stage of your shoot, which includes cinematography, audio, lights, as well as directing, art and effects. Post production begins when your camera stops rolling. All footage is then logged and captured, organized, and then edited. But Post Production does not stop here. Effects and transitions are designed, music is added, and color compositions are made.
now lets have a look at how i will implement the first element element into MY music video production!
Pre-production
-the planning stage
this stage included making brainstorms of what to film, where to film, who to film, who's filming what bits, timing, props that we will be needing etc..
above: the FIRST plan for our video! (key thoughts and ideas)
which looked like this:
The "initial plan" sheet just breifly showed the key elements of our video, particularly mis-en-scene, which was heavily influenced by other grime videos (as researched earlier)
the plan was mainly OUR ideas for filming, so we didn't need audience research on this, as this would be influenced by audience research and other videos, and general concepts to further develop into our FIRST concept for the video!
First draft of concept for video!
this part was to get our ideas for the actual video itself together, in our group we put our heads together and made an outline for the video itself (the video concept)
the first thing we needed to consider when coming up with our first concept for the video, would have to be, "what are typical features of the grime genre? how do we incorporate it into video?"
so we came up with a list of features and how we would incorporate it into the video:
Big quesion: How would you incorporate Grime genre into your music video?
Grime genre feature
how would i incorporate this into my video?
one artist trying to emerge from his local streets, to the streets of the uk
--mis-en-scene--
Show Kingsta rapping in his home streets, the way he keeps moving into the camera will show how he's trying to "emerge" onto the grime scene to make a name for himself, close-ups will also be used to establish that first relationship with the artists
"Street swagger" - clothes which show where the artist is from, a suited and booted artist would associate with mainly R'n'B nowadays, like ne-yo. Clothing has ALOT to do with genre as there are different clothing styles for different genre's of music.
--Costume--
urban clothes, not as much hip-hop, mainly nike, adidas, ecko etc.. a dress sense to reinforce Kingsta's origins
as most "ilford boys" wear swaggered out nike trakkies with a matching cap and a nice pair of nike dunks, this is what kingsta will wear, with probably a nice watch on, keeping in mind not to make it too "bling" as that's really hip hop.
in videos, its all about keeping it about the artist
--framing--
in literally ALL the shots, the focus will ONLY be on Kingsta, not like in other videos where there are random characters scattered about in the video, there will only be a couple of scenes with Kingsta's boys, because in grime, its mainly about artists representing themselves and their own views, not others.
How grime artists are "hard"
--choreography--
i've noticed how grime artists are "hard" in their lyrical genius, and the movements they make with their hand and body, and facial expressions in their videos! so i will ensure that Kingsta keeps a hard front when filming!
our ideas for the first draft for the concept of the video also derived from other videos in the same genre! here are some videos which inspired us for our initial ideas:
Above: newham generals "ard"
What inspired me for my first concept from this video?
1)the clothing: wearing a cap, so i wanted Kingsta wearing a cap in his shots
2)Frame2frame: how each frame follows another, there are about 6 locations in total, and they keep popping up over and over in a different order, so i decided, for my video, i'd film in about 6 different locations, then, when editing, i'd just make a video of a compilation of different scenes in each location, of every location, over and over.
3) facial expressions: how they all look "hard" looking straight into the camera when spitting, and they look "vexed" (typical of the grime genre
4) framing:, it doesn't look extremely proffesional, as you have to remember that grime isn't "big league" music, so its not filmed in studio's with proffesional equipment, most of its made by someone holding a camera and filming their boys in the streets going lyrical. so i thought, for my video i'd also make it look as if its a casual thing where the artist is out and is just making a recording of him and his music, but not to make it look glamourous, but keep it "grimey" if you get what i mean!
5) location: i wanted to shoot in the streets aswell! with brick walls in the background.
Above: Pow 2011 - by lethal bizzle and various grime artists..and chipmunk.. o_O
What inspired me for my first concept from this video?
1) the location: i liked the top of the car park idea! with the city in the background! its like a sense of being "on top" with your roots in the background (the urban city)
2)the cutting rate: how quickly shots change, but the camera's hardly ever steady! it looks "grimey" not like a top studio-shot, glammed RnB video!
3)really BIG hand movements! - i liked this idea because it made the artists look "streetwise" and these movements are associated with grime mainly
4) the costume: they're mainly wearing nike, adidas, Ecko, and new era caps! this is proper grime-style clothes.
5)the artist in different areas continuing one verse: take JME's bit for example, his verse is sung in 3 locations starting at the car park, then the bank, then the vault, then just him, then back to the car park, in just ONE verse!
So, from other videos, and my own ideas, i came up with my FIRST concept for my music video! (how exciting) i drew this up on a brainstorm which looked like:
Above: my first concept for my video! after everything that influenced me, these would be the main features of my music video! next i will be starting on artist feedback! and developing it!
Here's a list of some of the features in it and why i did it that way!
The colours: -kept the background simple black and white art becuase it makes everything in the foreground easy to read and see without getting confused, it looks pretty good, and it goes with the graffiti font of the main title, you wouldn't really associate that background with any other genre to be honest, it does actually fit with the grime genre! -the font is white to make it easy to read, and it has impact on the audience too, the way it all jumps out at you -the pictures are red and white because they are the same as on the CD cover! it works together, and audience can realise how this is all one big "marketing pack" as Kingsta is also wearing the same hoodie he wore in the video too!
the tabs: -have the little grime icon coming up behind it to convey its genre clearly, (now you know its grime! -are laid out that way to make it aesthetically pleasing, and it matches the layout on the final draft of the website too -the font matches the font on the main screen too!
the buttons:-Home: this is on all pages, so people can navigate back to the homepage (if the need to)
-Bio: a biography of kingsta, from the start of his music career, to now, and what he plans on doing, it creates a second level relationship between artist and audience, as they get to know more about him
-Whats hot: this is the latest news in grime! everything that's "hot" will be posted on this weekly, for audiences to read, and even comment on! and post their own reads! i put this in because it takes my website to the next level! it creates a "global village" where people can get together and read up on whats going on in the grime world!
-Gallery: these are images and videos of Kingsta's music, its typical to almost every other website, so i thought i should put it up too!
-Music: this was an obvious one..as its a music website! its got all his tracks! and a bit of a bio on each track, i.e. how it was composed, its influences etc..
-Mix!: this is a unique feature i came up with, its where fans cna mix kingsta's music! with an embedded software, like fruityloops! it encourages prosuming!
-Fanpage: this was typical to ALL music websites, where fans can interact with eachother, and kingsta can make special appearances here and talk to his fans directly!
-Blogger: this is a link to Kingsta's blog (which has a link to THIS blog) so people can know WAY more about the music and really get "in the know" about his music!
-Contact: alot of websites i looked at had this feature! its where fans can actually contact the artist, with anything they want to say, comments, constructive feedback, or just general praise for his music!
overall i think my website has done very well in achieving its goal..which was to create another dimension for consumers to come on to know more about Kingsta, and be more involved with his music, which is the general modern day trend, where people can do more than just listen to music, but actually become part of it, and influence it! which audiences just love doing!
Differences with other productions its simple, im GCSE i made a website using powerpoint! and this is an actual website which is now available online for the world to see!
